Men’s Health Week: June 11th – 17th
Each June, Men’s Health Week is celebrated globally. Like other health awareness days, the purpose is to bring awareness to health issues that affect men disproportionately. However, the focus also shines a light on men not getting the care they need because they are not aware of a problem or are not comfortable seeking out treatment.
The main theme around the world this year is diabetes in men. If unmanaged, diabetes can cause far-reaching health implications such as heart disease, nerve damage and kidney damage. The death rate from heart disease is much higher for men with diabetes than it is for men who don’t have diabetes. While much work has been done in the diagnosis and fight against Diabetes, awareness is the most important thing. The more people are aware of it, the more likely they are to make healthy changes and stop or delay the onset of diabetes.
Pharmacists, you can help! It can be as simple as urging all your patients to get a yearly check up if they are not doing so, or by going more in-depth like placing material on diabetes in your pharmacy. We offer many disease state brochures, diabetes included. Learn more men’s health week activities at www.menshealthmonth.org
